Developments in the Barton Free Speech Case
By: Edith Hakola, Executive Vice President
I was glad to be able to report
to you that we won at the Supreme Court in the crucial Sandoval Official
English case.
Now I have some more good news to report. You'll
remember the Michigan housewife, Janice Barton, who
has been appealing her conviction and a 45-day jail sentence for using an
ethnic
slur in a private statement that Hispanics should learn to speak English. Mrs. Barton has
called to tell me that the Michigan Supreme Court has returned her case to
the Appeals Court for further consideration.
That means that the Court of Appeals will now have to issue a full
opinion on her appeal, rather than the brush off it originally gave her.
The Center for American Unity will continue to monitor
this situation closely!
